The Haunted Hamlet
Halloween fun for the whole family in Essex, NY
On Saturday, October 29th Essex, NY will transform into The Haunted Hamlet. The fun begins at 2 pm with jack-o-lantern carving, a kid-friendly scavenger-hunt at 3 pm, and a “no scare” tour of our Haunted Town Hall at 4 pm. “Full scare” tours for older kids and adults run from 5 – 8 pm.
When you’ve had your fill of thrills, join us on Main Street! The block in front of Town Hall will be closed to automobiles for music, dancing, hot cider, popcorn, s’mores around the campfire, and more!.
But that’s not all! The Haunted Town Hall reopens from 4-8 pm on Monday, October 31st, and trick-or-treating kicks off on Main Street at 5 pm.

Chestnut Grove is Shake, Rattle, Rock’n’Roll— five best friends making music
Muddy Ruckus is a rock duo of “darkly inventive americana” according to the New York Music Daily. Guitarist Ryan Flaherty and drummer Erika Stahl of Portland, Maine play a grungy style of railroad indie punk blues. This stripped-down power-duo blends rootsy guitar and edgy percussion on a suitcase drum kit, and is known for a full rock band sound.

Christian McBurney speaks on his new book, Dark Voyage: An American Privateer’s War Against the British Slave Trade in Africa (Westholme, 2022). The book is fascinating microhistory of an American privateer that sails to the coast of Africa and attacks a British slave trading post and British slave ships. It is also a vehicle to learn about the British slave trade, which dominated the worldwide slave trade at the time of the War of Independence. The book further details for the first time other American privateers capturing numerous British slave ships just before they reached their destinations in the Caribbean, with the consequence of seriously disrupting and virtually halting the British slave trade.
