Essex County Arts Council Announces
ECAC Sunburst Award to honor Meredith Johnston
Meredith Johnston, 1944 to 2023, touched the lives of many young people in her long career as an art teacher at Westport Central School in Westport, NY.
Meredith‘s personal interest in her students helped so many to overcome challenges and find success through artistic expression. While her time as an art teacher brought joy to many, the positive effects of Meredith’s public service extended far beyond the classroom. Meredith led by example, cheerfully and tirelessly, engaging in town activities and initiatives that benefited the community. As an innovative, accomplished ceramicist, she generously shared her work. She is remembered for her creativity and enduring commitment to students, art, and her community.
The Westport Heritage House will sponsor an annual Sunburst Award in Meredith’s memory, to be presented to a talented ceramic artist.
