Riding in Style

Stoddard Photographs Highlight Turn-of-the-Century Travel

Tuesday, April 2 thru Sunday, June 16

A new exhibit set to open in the Stoddard Gallery at the Chapman Museum highlights horse-drawn carriages filled with tourists, steamboats loading passengers to explore remote lakes, and train cars bringing businessmen to their destinations.

The photographs featured in Riding in Style offer a glimpse at how individuals and families navigated the southern Adirondack region at the end of the nineteenth century. While we may take a plane, train, or automobile today—travel looked quite different during Stoddard’s lifetime.
