The Thrive Project Presents

Beatriz Leonardo: A Journey of Belonging Through Art

Wednesday, August 21st, 5 – 7 pm, Meet and Greet
Saturday, August 24, 1 – 3pm, Workshop with Beatriz Leonardo

The Thrive Project proudly announces its first-ever sponsored residency, featuring Beatriz Leonardo, a multidisciplinary visual artist from Portugal. Beatriz’s work spans various mediums, including relief printing, illustration, and mural painting. Her art delves into themes of mythology, folklore, feminism, identity, and nature, capturing these concepts in a fantastical, symbolic style.

During her three-week residency, Beatriz will lead workshops and engage with the local community to design and create a mural that reflects shared identity and values. This collaborative artwork, to be painted behind the Downtown Artist Cellar gallery, will symbolize the unity and spirit of the community. IBC is generously providing the wall space for this mural.

Hailing from Portugal, Beatriz holds degrees in Graphic Design and Multidisciplinary Printmaking and currently serves as Head Illustrator and Animator at The Discourse Studio in Bristol, UK. She began creating large-scale works in 2016 and has murals in Portugal, Mexico, the United States, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The residency will culminate in the unveiling of the community mural, a lasting symbol of belonging and connection.

Medicine Game

Thursday, August 29, 2024, 7:30 – 9:30 pm

Tucked away in central New York State is the Onondaga Nation, a sovereign Native American community known to produce some of the top lacrosse players in the world. Yet, the fear of leaving their community, substance abuse, and poverty have kept far too many of these players from venturing off the ‘rez’ and into the collegiate or professional ranks. A film six years in the making, The Medicine Game shares the remarkable journey of two brothers from the Onondaga Nation driven by a single goal; to beat the odds and play lacrosse for national powerhouse Syracuse University. The obstacles in their way are frequent and daunting, but the brothers love for the game and their family’s unyielding determination, propels these boys towards their dream.

Summer Concert Series

Keanen Start and Orion Kribs

Wednesday, August 28, 2024, 7:15 – 8:15 pm

The Adirondack duo have brought their blend of modern yet classically old-timey sounds to many appreciative audiences in the and beyond.

Keanen Stark (guitar, harmonica, banjo) “is becoming a master of the old-time folk styles of Woody Guthrie. A folk singer in the truest sense, with a knack for cross-harp, his stripped down minimalist take on traditional folk music is sure to please.”

Orion Kribs (mandolin, guitar) “is a world class mandolin player capable of breakneck speed and nuanced solo work. Orion has also played in the Celtic bluegrass band The McKrells, among others, and is an endorsee of Godin-Seagull guitars.”

Each a capable lead vocalist, Stark and Kribs swap old-timey folk, blues, bluegrass, and classic americana tunes, and dabble at entertaining endless other influences and flights of fancy.
