Music over the Marsh at the VIC
JamCrackers
Friday, September 13, 7 – 8:30 pm
Seasoned solo performers Dan Berggren, Peggy Lynn and Dan Duggan have combined talents to create a dynamic trio named in honor of the river drivers who broke up log jams. They worked hard to find solutions, to get things rolling again, and it was a job that couldn’t be done alone. Dan, Peggy and Dan feel the same way about their music.
These good friends and accomplished musicians bring a rare blend of humor history and musical spirit to their performances.

The Westport Library Presents
Reporting as Storytelling: The Art of Journalism, Featuring Brian Mann
Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at 6 pm, FREE, $20 suggested donation to support the library
Join National Public Radio (NPR) national journalist and Westport’s own Brian Mann in a thought-provoking conversation hosted by local resident David Howson as they explore the intersection of journalism and storytelling.
Brian will discuss how he transforms raw facts into engaging narratives that resonate on an emotional level, making complex issues like the opioid crisis, or most recently, the Paris Olympic Games, more relatable. Together, they’ll delve into the challenges and rewards of reporting in a way that not only informs but also connects and inspires change.
Brian Mann is NPR’s first national addiction correspondent. He also covers breaking news in the U.S. and around the world. Mann began covering drug policy and the opioid crisis as part of a partnership between NPR and North Country Public Radio in New York. After joining NPR full time in 2020, Mann was one of the first national journalists to track the deadly spread of the synthetic opioid fentanyl, reporting from California and Washington state to West Virginia. After losing his father and stepbrother to substance abuse, Mann’s reporting breaks down the stigma surrounding addiction and creates a factual basis for the ongoing national discussion. Mann has also served on NPR teams covering the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the Beijing Winter Olympics, the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Gaza conflict. During a career in public radio that began in the 1980s, Mann has won numerous regional and national Edward R. Murrow awards. He is author of a 2006 book about small town politics called Welcome to the Homeland, described by The Atlantic as “one of the best books to date on the putative-red-blue divide.” Mann grew up in Alaska and is now based in Westport, NY. His audio postcards, broadcast on NPR, describe his backcountry trips into wild places around the world.
This talk will offer a unique glimpse into the art of storytelling within the world of journalism.

Leaves Torn Asunder, A Radio Play
Sunday, September 15, 2024, 2 – 4 pm, Donations accepted
The year is 1850 in Nobles Corners, an area that will be eventually known as the Town of Johnsburg. Descendants from Scotland, Ireland, England, and other European countries have settled here to farm the land with the grit and determination necessary to survive in the Adirondack climate.
Nobles General Store is the center of commerce where news and gossip are shared. Differing views on slavery in Nobles Corners begin to divide the community as southern states secede and the country heads for violence. As war begins, men and boys enlist to fight, leaving the women and a few men behind to work and worry about their loved ones fighting to keep the country together.
Based on the historical novel Leaves Torn Asunder, by Glenn Pearsall, the story covers the years just before and during the Civil War, where boys became men before their time, lives were lost, and the war eventually won. Several characters from the story are buried in local cemeteries and their descendants still live in these parts.
RSVP: call 518-251-2505 or email assistant@tannerypondcenter.org to reserve your seat.

Signed copies of Leaves Torn Asunder, as well as Glenn’s book Echoes in These Mountains on 55 historic sites in Johnsburg, will be available with 10% of the proceeds going to Gem Radio Theatre.
