Hill and Hollow Music Presents
Tim Collins & Quadro Nuevo
Sunday, October 13 at 3 pm
Vibes virtuoso Tim Collins enjoys a thriving career performing jazz throughout Europe. The Plattsburgh native has been living in Munich for more than a decade, but he loves returning to the North Country to visit family and friends and to play music. A Tim Collins concert is always an eagerly anticipated event.
Tim is returning to the States and bringing one of his favorite groups with whom he frequently collaborates and tours: Quadro Nuevo. After playing together for many years, the artists of Quadro Nuevo and Tim Collins have joyfully evolved their own distinct magical music genre somewhere between Jazz and World Music. The melodies of old Europe and the Mediterranean spirit of “la dolce vita” intertwine in Quadro Nuevo’s art. Think French valse, Balkan swing, Aegean myth melodies, Neapolitan hit songs, Arabesques, tangos, and more, all sparkling with exotic flavors, spicy grooves, and daredevil improvisations.

Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton Presents
Paul Meyers and Matt Dunne Duo
Friday, October 11, 6:30-8:30
The UU Church of Canton Jazz and Coffee Nights series with guest musicians Paul Meyers and Matt Dunne Duo. Potsdam native, Paul Meyers, has played around the world, and while living in New York City has made a name for himself as one of the best jazz guitarists in the country.
When asked about jazz as an essential part of the church’s ministry efforts, bassist of the 5 Dots and the Church’s Minister Rev. James Galasinski said, “Jazz is a unique art that puts us in the present moment and teaches us that while we may not be able to go back and fix things, if we listen to each other, our mistakes become opportunities.”
Performances are staged in a jazz cafe lounge set up, are family-friendly, and hosted in a supportive and alcohol-free environment. The coffee bar will include coffee, various teas and herbals, and hot chocolate. All jazz and coffee nights are free and open to the public and welcoming to all. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to support the Church and Community Program.

Author Tour
Carol Hoenig, author of Before She Was a Finley
Friday, October 11, 5 pm, Wead Library, Malone
Saturday, October 12, 2 pm, Bookburgh Books, Champlain Centre, 60 Smithfield Blvd., Suite 15, Plattsburgh
Sunday, October 13, 1 pm, The Bookstore Plus, Lake Placid
In Carol Hoenig’s previous novel, Without Grace, it is believed that Grace Finley walked out on her husband and two young children to fulfill a selfish dream of becoming a famous singer, leaving behind rumors and questions among her family and townsfolk in the mountains of Upstate New York.
Now in Before She Was a Finley, it is years later when Adele, a reluctant young journalism student is assigned to “get” a story from a local nursing home where she comes across elderly Grace Finley. Over time, Grace slowly takes Adele back to the 1930s and subsequent years that follow as she provides bits and pieces that eventually reveal the dark truth as to why she walked out on her family carrying only a guitar and suitcase. Adele knows that the class assignment was simply to write about a local person, and even though journalists aren’t supposed to be a part of the story, she cannot shake what she discovered and wants to do more to set the record straight. But is there anyone still alive who would care?
Carol Hoenig is the author of Without Grace, Of Little Faith and The Author’s Guide to Planning Book Events. Learn more about her HERE.

North Country Zine Fest
Saturday, October 12, Noon-5 pm
We’re so excited to host the first ever North Country Zine Fest!
This event is co-produced by local zinesters Erin Dorney & our very own Megan Charland. This is an event not to be missed!
So, WHAT exactly is a zine? A zine could really be ANYTHING.
A zine (pronounced “zeen”) is a self-published print-work that is typically produced in small, limited batches. (Think magazines.) Zines are created and bound in many DIY ways, but traditionally editions are easily reproduced—often by crafting an original “master,” and then photocopying, folding, and stapling the pages into simple pamphlets. Zines may also be sewn, taped, glued—or even exist in unbound and other non-folio formats. The main rule is that there are NO RULES!
“Zinesters” (people who create zines) are likely to be more motivated by self-expression and artistic passion than they are by profit: zines are usually inexpensive and sometimes distributed for free or in trade for other zines. The history of zines is super fascinating!

Among Friends
Thursday, October 10, 4-6 pm
Artists are invited to bring in a couple of pieces of their work, either completed or in process, to be constructively critiqued by their peers in a supportive, encouraging environment. Peer art critiques help bring different perspectives to an artist’s work, enhancing understanding of where a piece or series might be going, what might be working really well, or what might need a little more work.
This event is free and open to all artists and art enthusiasts.
