Lake Flower Landing Presents

Syd Straw & Chris Kowanko

Saturday, October 12, 8 pm

Chris Kowanko will open for indie-rock legend Syd Straw.  Scott Renderer will sit in on drums. On Syd’s first visit to the Adirondacks from southern Vermont, she will be accompanied by guitarist Don Piper, her accompanist for more than two decades.

Syd Straw began singing backup for Pat Benatar, then took her distinctive and powerful voice to the indie/alternative scene.

Chris’s second album, Spell, was produced by Steve Fisk, who produced many prominent Northwest bands, like Nirvana, and Soundgarden. Spell features pop songs that balance heart, humor, and delicious stick-in-the-ear melodies. Chris moved to Upper Jay, NY, in the early 2000’s, and formed Monsterbuck, an electric trio with the Renderer brothers, Scott and Byron.  Scott will join Chris at Lake Flower Landing on drums.
The appeal of seeing Syd Straw in person includes her quick wit, warmth and ability to connect with audiences. She’ll be performing a catalog of original songs and covers. There’s real potential for collaboration with these charismatic performers.

The Sembrich Receives Award for Excellence

The Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN) has awarded The Sembrich a 2024 Award for Excellence for our recent efforts to preserve Marcella Sembrich’s “Queen of the Night” costume!

This Project Award is in recognition of the successful preservation of Marcella Sembrich’s “Queen of the Night” costume. The gown, currently the centerpiece of The Sembrich’s 2024 studio centennial exhibition, “Mastering Mozart,” was worn by Sembrich in her role for the Metropolitan Opera’s 1900 premiere production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). It is the single largest conservation project for a collection item completed in the organization’s history. Gwen Spicer, of Spicer Art Conservation, completed conservation activities, and the extensive treatments included encapsulation of the majority of the costume in fine, custom-dyed netting, stabilization of different components of the couture gown, train, and veil, recreation of one shoulder element based on historical photos, and the re-attachment of hundreds of sequins.

The Adirondack Center for Writing Presents

Lady in the Lake, with Sophie Morelli
+ Open Mic

Wednesday, October 16, 7 pm

Join us for the first reading of Lake Placid native Sophie Morelli’s debut collection of poems, and an open mic where anyone can share up to five minutes of their own writing (bonus points if you make it spooky!).

In 1933 Mabel Smith Douglass took a row boat across Lake Placid and never returned. You’ve probably heard her referred to as “The Lady in the Lake”, but in Fathom (Bottlecap Press, 2024), Sophie Morelli asks: who was Mabel Smith Douglass, and what can we learn from her story about family, grief, and home?

Sophie Morelli is an Adirondacks-based poet holding a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Writing, as well as a Master’s Degree in English Education, both from SUNY Potsdam. She was an Anne Labastille Memorial Writing resident in the fall of 2023 and has work featured with Querencia Press and Illuminated Press. Her poem “When They Turn The Sun On Again” was part of ACW’s Postcard Poems broadside series.
