The Westport Library Presents
The Crisis of the Union, Then and Now
by Connor Williams, American Historian
October 15, 2024, 6 pm, Free. $20 suggested donation to support
In the third and final yalk of a three-part series held this summer and fall, Williams will present The Crisis of the Union, Then and Now. Using a historical perspective, Williams will illuminate the many factors from approximately 1848 to 1861 that started a conflict that (between those fighting for the United States and those fighting against them) killed more Americans than all our other wars from 1775 onward, combined.
Following the presentation, Williams will guide a respectful discussion about the current politics of our present, and how they both resonate and differ with the passions of the past. For these conversations he will keep the focus more on trends and ideologies than party affiliation; Williams only plans on using “Republican” and “Democrat” in their historical, 1850s sense.

For the Love of Peat: The Hidden World of Northern Peatlands
Tuesday, October 15, 2024, 7 – 8:30 pm
Nestled in the heart of the Adirondack Park there are vast swaths of sphagnum moss stretching across the horizon. Ancient black spruce trees and fields of sedges pepper a dense blanket of green, red, and gold moss. This spongy riot of color and texture conceals another world beneath the surface. What looks like a wide and flat valley is actually a floating raft of vegetation submerged in water. These expansive, floating mats are called peatlands, and their future is in our hands.
Join Charlie Reinertsen to hear about his investigations into Northern Peatlands in Adirondack Park. Learn how these ecosystems can support biodiversity and address climate change. Charlie will share aerial footage and photography from The Northern Peatlands Project, a visual journey through one of Earth’s rarest ecosystems. Visit HERE to learn more about The Northern Peatlands Project and to subscribe to monthly news, delivered straight from our peatlands.

Ghost Light: Between Fall and Flight makes visible what is invisible. The two beings lead us into a captivating performance that features a blend of stunning acrobatic feats, choreography, ghostly lights and upbeat music.
