Adirondack A&E e-News # 463

Mark your calendars for a special virtual presentation by Maury Thompson, author, freelance writer, and former reporter for The Post-Star, on Tuesday, November 19, at 7 p.m. on Zoom.

Discover the fascinating history of Black baseball players in the Adirondack region, where, despite being banned from major leagues in the 19th century, they found opportunities to play. Though inclusion and diversity weren’t the primary motivations, the presence of Black baseball teams boosted attendance—and revenue—at local ballparks in need.

In this presentation, Maury will explore the role of traveling teams and hotel worker teams that played in the area, including Glens Falls and Washington County, as well as the local athletes who crossed the color barrier. He will also discuss how many Black baseball teams were forced to blend comedy with their athletic prowess to gain acceptance.

This program is free but requires a reservation. Register HERE.

Letters for Ceasefire

Third Thursday (6 – 8:30 pm) of every month

First Saturday (2 – 4:30 pm) of every month

A group of concerned Adirondack residents will meet twice a month at the Saranac Lake Free Library to write letters to leaders calling for an end to US involvement in the wars in Gaza and Lebanon, plan pro-peace actions, and raise funds for families seeking safety. The events are free, all-ages, and open to the public. Anyone who wants to see an end to the wars in Gaza and Lebanon is welcome to attend.

This group, PS – Letters for Ceasefire, met weekly between January and October 2024, welcoming attendees who wrote over a thousand pieces of mail to elected officials demanding action on the ongoing violence in the Middle East.

These gatherings will now resume in the Cantwell Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library.

Talk by public historian Tisha Dolton

Wednesday, November 20, 2024, 7 pm

Since 2016, Dolton has uncovered the names of at least seventy women in Warren County, and many more in Washington County, who campaigned for woman’s right to vote by looking at local club notices in digitized newspapers. She has presented many programs, both locally and regionally, about these unsung heroines.

In 2020 Dolton received an Individual Artist Grant from Lower Adirondack Regional ArtsCouncil (LARAC) to create 42 embroidered portraits of New York State suffragists, including five from Warren County, and the exhibition, Equali-tea: Suffragist Tea Cozies in Redwork. Warren County Historical Society then published a book based on the project in 2022.
