Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton Hosts
Introduction to Tango Dancing
Saturday, November 30, 6 – 7:30 pm
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton will host a tango lesson and dancing as part of the organization’s effort to create social bonds and community connections through dance.
Karlos Bermann, father of the St. Lawrence County Center for History & Culture Executive Director Carlene Bermann, will lead the lesson. Mr. Bermann facilitates tango dancing in Virginia at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk and at Southside Tango in Hampton Roads.
When asked why tango dancing is his passion, Mr. Bermann said, “In South America they say, ‘Life is a tango’, and truly, tango music, and the dance that interprets it, may contain all of life’s dramas. In the course of a set (tanda) of three or four songs, the pair of experienced tango dancers can act out the emotions of a lifetime.” He added, “I dance tango because it has depth that no other dance, save ballet, can approach.”
Participants will learn the basic moves of tango. Prior dance experience is not necessary, or a partner. Dancers will be partnered up at the lesson. Participants can wear dance shoes if they have them, or shoes with smooth, hard soles. Heels are okay for women who are comfortable in them.

Sherlock Holmes’ The Night Before Christmas
Saturday, November 30, 7 pm
Sunday, December 1, 2 pm
‘Tis the night before Christmas in 1886 at the home of Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective. His partner, Dr. Watson, dressed as Santa Claus, is preparing to present Christmas gifts to the niece and nephew of Mrs. Hudson the housekeeper. Shortly after Mrs. Hudson and Dr. Watson depart, Holmes is visited by good friend Lord Widcombe. Lord William is hosting a Christmas party for guests with a sack of precious jewelry, wrapped in 20-pound notes, to be given as gifts. A threatening ransom note has been delivered, written by a familiar hand – MORIARITY!
Detective Holmes agrees to attend the party disguised as Father Christmas to apprehend Lou the Lisper, working for the dastardly criminal Moriarity. In a series of comical events, the two sacks of Christmas gifts get switched. Amid the excitement of the holiday, Christmas carols, a visit to the Disciples of the Octagonal Square headquarters and more, a happy ending is found at last.
