From Saranac Lake ArtWorks

Honoring Sandy Hildreth

As Sandy Hildreth retires from ArtWorks, we are forever grateful to her for all that she has done in establishing ArtWorks. Her tireless work through the years has made us what we are today, and we are excited to build a strong future.

To honor Sandy, ArtWorks is establishing the Sandra Hildreth Arts Scholarship, which we are piloting in the Saranac Lake school district. This scholarship will give a gift to a senior student who is both looking to pursue a degree in the arts and has a passion for community service.

This combination is exactly what Sandy embodies and we hope it will inspire future generations.

An in-person celebration of Sandy will take place August 21, at Hotel Saranac as part of the Adirondack Plein Air Festival that Sandy was so instrumental in creating.

Metalsmithing at the Strand: Handforged Knives

Registration opens Saturday, February 1, 10 am

Strand Center for the Arts has officially released its 2025 schedule for the highly-anticipated art and MakerSpace class, Handforged Knives.

There are seven separate sessions from Apr. to Oct. that students cansign up for. Each session has a maximum capacity of six students.

Metalsmithing at the Strand: Handforged Knives, led by Samantha Williams  and Tom Larsen of Smiling Dog Forge, is a two-day workshop where students get the opportunity to create their own knives from scratch. From heating and hammering on the anvils to assembling and polishing the finished product, students can completely immerse themselves in this unique, hands-on experience.

Starting with a six-inch piece of high-carbon steel, students will spend the first day of class forging that steel into a knife and will learn about the heat treatment process. The second day of class will cover the finishing processes, including putting the handle on the blade.

Handforged Knives is for students fourteen years of age and older. No prior experience is necessary.

To learn more about classes and to register, visit HERE.
