SATURDAY! MUSIC AT UPPER JAY ART CENTER

Saturday, December 11, 8 pm

Music By Brent Carter and Friends
“A Soulful Journey”

A Soulful Journey looks at the birth of the blues and its origins in the songs of slavery, including Gospel music.

Carter and friends show us the evolution from Blues to Jazz to R&B to Rap and Hip Hop. They look at the post war Black Migration north to cities such as Detroit and Chicago and, of course, New York, which brought the American Black experience to larger (and whiter) audiences through the music of Artists such as Louis Jordan, Ray Charles and the brilliant vision of people like Berry Gordy, founder of Motown. The struggle for Civil Rights in the 60s would help usher in the birth of Rap and Hip Hop in the late 70s and 80s, which was a musical response to urban poverty and violence. Today, nearly every aspect of music and Pop culture has been influenced by the music of Black America.
