Hill and Hollow Music Presents

Bittersweet Farewell Performance by the Renowned Alexander Quartet

Sunday, June 8, 4 pm

“Dream-come-true performances from the excellent Alexander Quartet.” — THE BOSTON GLOBE
“This is a group deep in its element, firm in its stride.” — LOS ANGELES TIMES

The beloved and admired string quartet will retire at the end of this season, bringing to a close a remarkable 44-year career. Standing among the world’s premier ensembles, the Alexanders have performed in the major music capitals of five continents. They have been a vital artistic presence in their home base of San Francisco, serving since 1989 as Ensemble-in-Residence of San Francisco Performances. The quartet’s recordings have won international critical acclaim; they are especially admired for their interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, and Shostakovich.

The Alexander String Quartet (HERE) has performed at Lincoln Center, the 92nd Street Y, the Metropolitan Museum, Jordan Hall, the Library of Congress, and appeared as guests at universities including Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Lewis & Clark, and UCLA. Numerous overseas tours include the U.K., Czech Republic, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, France, Greece, Republic of Georgia, Argentina, Panamá, and the Philippines. Their visit to Poland’s Beethoven Easter Festival is beautifully captured in the 2017 award-winning documentary, Con Moto: The Alexander String Quartet.

The June 8 program features two iconic masterpieces: Haydn’s String Quartet in G major, Op. 77, No. 1 and Schubert’s String Quartet in D minor, D. 810 “Death and the Maiden” plus a contemporary work by rising-star composer Kian Ravaei: The Little Things, inspired by poetry of Emily Dickinson.

The View Arts Center Presents

Art+Type

Through Sunday, July 27, 2025

We unconsciously consume typography every day without thinking about the letterforms themselves. Yet, the way they are displayed and perceived frames our daily experience.

Because we don’t expect type in art, when we see it, we give it our full attention. Even when the letterforms are abstracted, often the initial (unconscious) impulse is to restructure the elements into digestible text, to “decode” the abstract and resolve its meaning.

This exhibition explores the impact of incorporating text and letterforms in art. Although these works represent diverse art practices, all use typography to support a visual idea or compositional aim.
