Architectural Heritage (AARCH) presents
Vanish: Disappearing Icons of a Rural America
Wednesday, July 2, 2025, 7 pm
Old homes, barns, churches, industrial sites, and other historic buildings dot the rural American landscape, the Adirondack region included. While we celebrate preservation success stories, many buildings remain endangered. Even in a state of disrepair, these sites evoke a range of emotions.
Fine art photographer Jim Westphalen’s film, Vanish: Disappearing Icons of a Rural America, chronicles his work to document the nation’s disappearing rural architecture. Westphalen’s evocative film showcases these structures front and center and highlights the people working to preserve their stories.
Join AARCH at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts for a special regional showing and Q&A session with the filmmaker.

Rachel Lamb joins Adirondack Artists Guild
The Adirondack Artists Guild is pleased to welcome woodcarver Rachel Lamb as a new member.
Rachel grew up in Chazy, NY, where she was an avid artist from a young age and dabbled in many different mediums. She studied Studio Art at St. Lawrence University and graduated in 2004 with a BA in Fine Arts. Rachel learned relief wood carving in 2001 during a college woodworking course through the Adirondack Semester. In 2006, she moved to the Adirondacks to be closer to the natural world and outdoor activities she loves.

Feeling a deep connection and appreciation for nature, much of her inspiration stems from the region’s intrinsic beauty. She also enjoys creating abstract pieces as they allow her to freely express her imagination. She uses basswood, palm handled tools and a detail knife for her creations, and finishes carvings by painting them with vibrant acrylic colors or applying oil-based stains.
Rachel’s work has been in many local and regional art exhibits. She lives in Bloomingdale with her husband, two boys and pets.
