The Westport Library Presents
A Hell of a Place to Lose a Cow: Hitchhiking Across America by Tim Brookes
Tuesday July 29, 2025, 7 pm, free
In the summer of 1973, Tim Brookes did what everyone did in those days: he hitchhiked around America. Twenty-five years later to the day, starting from exactly the same on-ramp on Interstate 80, he did what nobody was doing any more: he went back out on the road with his thumb out, this time as a National Geographic expedition to rediscover America, to rediscover hitchhiking, and to see if there was anything left of his 20-year-old self. The result was his award-winning book A Hell of a Place to Lose a Cow, a lot of stories, and a lot of surprises, some of them having nothing to do with asphalt.

A Conceptual Leap, Friday, August 1 to Saturday, August 23
Opening Reception Friday, August 1, 5 to 7 pm
Timeless Moments pairs Mary Woodcock Johnson’s expressive oil paintings with Angela Nephew’s luminous kiln formed glass.
Inspired by the natural beauty of the Adirondacks, both artists draw from lived experience to capture gesture, landscape, and light in works that invite reflection and emotional connection.

In A Conceptual Leap, artist Michael Hart invites viewers into an alternate reality. Nearly all photographs in this exhibit are presented in negative form, reversing tonal values and layered with transparent imagery or filtered through textured stained glass. Drawing on source material that spans 120 years, Hart uses time, memory, and transformation to create emotionally resonant visual experiences.
