A RETURN HOME, An Evening of Film and Music
Thursday, August 7, 7:30 pm, free
Join us for a powerful interdisciplinary evening exploring migration, resilience, and belonging through film, live music, and dialogue.
The evening features the premiere of A RETURN HOME, a black-and-white cinéma vérité documentary following Ukrainian journalist Nataliia Ruda as she meets asylum seekers in Ireland.
The screening will be accompanied by a live performance of the original score by composer Patrick Long, performed by pianist Jennifer Blyth. The piano soundtrack ripples throughout the film like currents of water, enhancing the pacing and amplifying the emotions of Ukrainians forced to begin their lives anew in a foreign land. “I think live performance brings a sense of urgency and presence to a film–especially now, when people can listen to recorded music anywhere at any time,” says Blyth.

Moscow Nights, Symphony Series
Saturday, August 9, 7:30 pm
This concert explores the complex emotions and artistic resilience of two iconic Russian composers, Dmitri Shostakovich and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Featuring Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, performed by the brilliant cellist James Baik, the program highlights the intense expressiveness and biting wit of a piece written during a time of political tension and personal introspection. Paired with this is Tchaikovsky’s deeply emotional Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique”, a powerful and haunting farewell that captures the depths of longing, vulnerability, and resignation. Together, these masterpieces offer a profound evening of music that speaks to the endurance of the human spirit in times of struggle and uncertainty.

NorthWind Fine Arts welcomes new member, pastelist Diane Leifheit
Diane has long been an active member of the North Country’s art community. She works primarily en plein air. Her work has been recently recognized by the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada, Cape Cod Society of Pastel Painters, Parrsboro International Plein Air, and the Frederick Remington Museum. The summer of 2023, she was artist-in-residence at Art Lab, Parrsboro, Nova Scotia.
Born in Rockville Center, NY, graduated with honors from Pratt, Diane has resided in Paul Smiths, New York since 1980.
Capturing landscape in pastel is a form of recording history. Leifheit feels the work being created in the time of global warming is playing witness to the changes occurring in our lifetime. Her intention since early 2000s has been to see the beauty that is now. Her work stands witness to the transitions in the environment.
