The Chapman Museum presents
J.F. Holley’s Adirondack Views
Thru Sunday, April 19, 2026
A new photography show in the Stoddard Gallery, highlights the work of James Frank Holley (1853–1942). Holley was a lifelong Warren County resident whose photographs documented people, places, and landscapes across the Adirondacks during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This is the first time a show of his photographs has been on view at the Chapman.
Working primarily from his studio in Chestertown, New York, Holley maintained a successful photography career while also pursuing a wide range of other professions. A true renaissance man, he tried his hand at dentistry and clock repair and worked as a commercial traveler selling everything from bicycles and candy to groceries and pianos. During the winter months, Holley operated a portrait gallery in his studio, while warmer seasons allowed him to travel throughout the region capturing scenic views.
Holley’s photographs span Warren and Hamilton counties and include images from locations such as Blue Mountain Lake and Raquette Lake, many of which were produced as part of his Adirondack Views series. Like photographer S.R. Stoddard, Holley documented individuals, groups, and iconic Adirondack landscapes, creating a visual record of everyday life and tourism in the region during a period of change and growth.
