Downtown Artist Cellar (DAC) presents

Conversations, Susan Hoffer, and

Street Level, Barry Lobdell

Conversations, thru Saturday, April 25, Main Gallery

Street Level, thru Saturday, April 4, Small gallery

Reception Friday, March 13, 5 – 7 pm

In Conversations, Susan Hoffer explores themes of community, belonging, and the space between differing viewpoints through expressive figurative oil paintings. Rooted in her personal experiences living in the Adirondacks, the work reflects moments of tension, connection, and shared humanity. Hoffer’s process involves layering, scraping, and manipulating oil paint to create surfaces that feel active and alive. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, the paintings invite viewers into an open exchange—encouraging reflection and new ways of seeing and being together.

Street Level by photographer Barry Lobdell captures everyday life in public spaces through candid moments and thoughtful observations of the built environment. Lobdell’s work blends spontaneous street photography with carefully considered responses to the situations he encounters. Each photograph offers a glimpse into the stories unfolding around us, inviting viewers to pause and notice the quiet narratives present in daily life.

Fort Ticonderoga Receives a Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Grant

Fort Ticonderoga was recently awarded a $10,000 Forrest E. Mars Jr. Chocolate History grant that will contribute to the development of a new interactive living history program recreating the chocolate sellers of the civilian market at Ticonderoga in 1776 in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. The grant was awarded at the Annual Heritage Chocolate Society meeting held in Washington, DC on February 19, 2026.

In four unique REAL TIME REVOLUTION® events, that chronicle the labor that led to liberty as it unfolded at Ticonderoga, our skilled living history staff will invite visitors to the market of 1776, exactly where it stood 250 years ago, on the man-made slope surrounding Fort Ticonderoga. As visitors explore four distinct chapters of the fight to secure independence, they will make connections to the networks of colonial trade that brought chocolate to the American colonies before the war.

Through the tropical origins of chocolate and other commodities, visitors will explore the covert commerce of American privateers running through the British blockade to continue lines of trade. Skilled costume educators will connect chocolate with these Revolutionary War themes, while bringing to life crucial moments 250 years ago, through REAL TIME REVOLUTION®.

In Case You Missed It

“This author drew on her Adirondack experience for a new thriller”

Last week, North Country Public Radio’s Mitch Tiech spoke with author Jennifer Denny about her new novel Calculated Risk as part of the “In the Adirondack Library” series for the Adirondack Experience, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (see ADK A&E e-News 660, February 23 HERE).

Both Denny and her heroine, Samantha Wethersfield, are young women with extensive experience in the outdoors, and a passionate feel for the Adirondacks. Wethersfield is a seasonal ranger, while the author has been a professional High Peaks summit steward, and is now manager of the Stewardship Program at the Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith’s College.

The novel depicts a pivotal time in Wethersfield’s life as she navigates potential changes in her job, her relationship, and even where she lives—at the same time she’s navigating some fast changes in the natural world as she goes on a shoulder season hike in the High Peaks.

Last week’s episode of Mitch’sNCPR North Words podcast, co-hosted with Ethan Shantie, includes an excerpt from that interview.

You can listen in to North Words HEREand you can view the “In the Adirondack Library” interview in its entirety HERE.
