Seagle Festival Expands Youth Opera Workshop
A Professional Stage for Adirondack Talent
Seagle Festival, the nation’s oldest vocal training program known for showcasing elite artists from around the globe, is officially launching its second season of the Youth Opera Workshop. This year, the program significantly deepens its roots in the North Country, offering local students an immersive professional experience at no cost to participating families.
The “Artist as Athlete” Standard
Under the direction of Josh Cook, Seagle Festival’s Director of Education and Community Engagement, and co-facilitator Mike Tracy, music teacher at Schroon Lake Central School, the workshop approaches performance with the same discipline and care found in high-level athletics. Moving beyond a standard rehearsal, the “Artist as Athlete” framework prioritizes the holistic well-being of the performer. To support the physical and mental stamina required for the stage, Seagle Festival provides healthy snacks at every session, ensuring students are fueled for the work at hand.
The program utilizes music and theater games to integrate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into every rehearsal. This creates a rare and vital “hub” for Adirondack children who are passionate about the arts—a community where they can find their peers, build resilience, and develop a professional sense of belonging.
A Deeper Dive Into the Craft
The 2026 season spans a 15-week timeline with twice-weekly sessions, a deliberate move to provide greater teaching depth than the program’s pilot year in 2025. Students will navigate two drastically different productions: the contemporary, atmospheric power of Dead Man Walking and the timeless, bright harmonies of The Sound of Music. While cast requirements for these shows differ, the Youth Opera Workshop serves as the common thread, training students to meet the high standards of the Seagle Festival mainstage.
