Winter Games Reception

In celebration of the 2023 FISU World University Games, which are based in Lake Placid this coming January, the Adirondack Artists Guild is hosting a special exhibit, “Winter Games”. Several artists have been invited to participate, including photographers who have photographed Olympic Games and World Cup events in the past.

Artists include photographers Nancie Battaglia, Rick Godin, Lou Reuter and Mark Kurtz as well as pastel artist Ingrid VanSlyke and painter Sandra Hildreth.

In reference to winter sport, pastel artist Ingrid Van Slyke commented that “the harsh environment can make people either hibernate or embrace all the wonderful winter sport activities we have here.“ Photographer Mark Kurtz has often said “If you’re going to live in the Adirondacks, you better like winter, because there is a lot of it!”

In addition to the events in Lake Placid, FISU competitions are happening in several venues around the North Country, including Saranac Lake (curling), Potsdam/Canton (hockey), Wilmington (alpine ski events at Whiteface Mountain) and North Creek (snowboard events at Gore Mountain). The curling events will take place at the newly renovated Saranac Lake Civic Center.

This special winter sport exhibit will run for for the full month of January 2023, so it will be on display during the time of the FISU Games (Jan 12-22). There will be an opening reception at the Artists Guild on Friday, January 6 from 5:00-8:00 PM, just before the Games open.

The Adirondack Artists Guild is a cooperative retail art gallery representing a diverse group of artists residing and working in the Tri-Lakes region of the Adirondack Park. The gallery is located at 52 Main St, Saranac Lake, 518 891-2615. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 until 5, and 11-3 on Sundays. The Guild is on Facebook, Instagram, and on the web at www.adirondackartistsguild.com.
