Ensemble Scholastica Performs “The Bride, the Dove and the Rose”

April 14 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$5 – $20

Canada’s only female vocal ensemble specializing in medieval plainchant and polyphony (c.800-1300 AD) is made up of talented professional vocalists from Montréal’s thriving early music community. Some of the members also play medieval instruments, such as the vielle, symphonia, and psaltery. The ensemble is named after St. Scholastica, the 6th-century woman who was the sister of St. Benedict, founder of the Benedictine Order. Although Scholastica’s renown has been eclipsed by that of her brother, she herself was the founder of the female branch of that immensely influential institution, which was responsible for the creation and dissemination of an extensive body of music over many centuries. Singing from authentic medieval manuscripts, yet with the added freedom of “elaboration” (ornamentation and improvisation), the ensemble’s goal is to share the exquisite beauty and intricacy of medieval music and the remarkable joy and complexity of medieval spirituality and culture. Rebecca Bain, ensemble director and a leading medievalist will give a pre-concert talk at 2:00 pm. Suggested admission at the door $20/$15/$5 (general/seniors/students).
