About the Artist
Robert Powell’s artistic foundation began with copying wildlife illustrations from The Conservationist Magazine. He went on to major in illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design and later studied advertising at Pratt Institute.
During the 1960s, Powell worked in advertising on Madison Avenue, eventually becoming a Vice President/Associate Creative Director. While working in the industry, he concurrently pursued his passion as an illustrator, primarily working in pen and ink for book publishers, magazines, and ad agencies. In 1985, he left Manhattan to run his own small agency in Pound Ridge, NY, which he operated until 2015.
Powell moved to the Adirondacks in 2001, and the beautiful surrounding environment heavily influences his work as a landscape painter. He views his artistic process as an ongoing journey focused on continuous growth rather than establishing a singular, rigid style. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese artist Hokusai, Powell notes that his work “may appear inconsistent as I explore; a style or look is not my goal, growing is.”
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Powell has spent 30 years participating in organizations and committees dedicated to environmental land use and preservation.
