Small Ships, Big Stories: Handcrafted Miniature Ships by John Coryea

July 30 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

The Downtown Artist Cellar is pleased to present Small Ships, Big Stories, a special three-day pop-up exhibition featuring the handcrafted miniature ships of North Country artist and model shipbuilder John Coryea. The exhibition will be on view July 30 through August 1, 2026, with an Artist Reception on Friday, July 31, from 5–7 PM.

Visitors are invited to see ships from the high seas—without getting wet! The exhibition features miniature vessels carefully handcrafted by Coryea over more than 50 years. From historic sailing ships to working vessels, each model reflects a deep appreciation for maritime history, remarkable craftsmanship, and extraordinary attention to detail.

More than a display of ships, the exhibition celebrates the art of making. Every piece represents countless hours of research, patience, problem-solving, and skilled handwork—reminding us that creativity often lives in the quiet dedication of learning a craft over a lifetime. Whether building a model ship, painting a canvas, or shaping clay, the creative process is one of curiosity, persistence, and continual discovery.

“At the Downtown Artist Cellar, we believe creativity takes many forms,” said Jennifer Bilow, Artistic Director. “John’s work reminds us that artistry can be found wherever imagination, craftsmanship, and care come together. These ships are not only beautifully made—they tell stories of history, exploration, and the enduring human desire to create.”

The public is invited to meet John Coryea during the reception on Friday, July 31, from 5–7 PM. Guests may also enter a raffle to win a model ship kit, with proceeds supporting The Thrive Project and its mission to provide opportunities for artists and meaningful arts experiences in the community.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
