The Right to Appear: Bright Kontor Osei
October 9 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

An immersive exhibition centering the voices of Ghanaian street vendors and exploring labor, resilience, and visibility. Through murals, painted phrases, portraiture, and sound, Osei brings the culture of street markets into the gallery—inviting reflection on what it means to be seen, heard, and valued.
Artist Statement:
The Right to Appear is a solo exhibition by Bright Kontor Osei inspired by his childhood in Ghana, where he sold goods alongside his father as a street vendor. The exhibition brings the sights and sounds of Ghana’s street markets into the gallery through large-scale murals, painted vendor catch phrases, and immersive sound. In the main gallery, powerful portraits paired with first-person text share the voices and stories of street sellers—placing them at the center rather than the margins. While rooted in Ghana, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on work, community, resilience, and what it means for every person to be seen, heard, and valued.
